Removal
NOTE:
Refer to the Transmission Cooler Flushing Job Aid on the FMCDealer
website.
- With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information,
refer to Section 100-02.
- Remove the battery tray. For additional information, refer to Section
414-01.
- Remove the Air Cleaner (ACL) . For additional information, refer to Section
303-12.
- Disconnect the electrical connectors.
- Transmission Range (TR) sensor electrical connector
- Transaxle solenoid electrical connector
- Disconnect the Turbine Shaft Speed (TSS) sensor electrical connector.
- Remove the transaxle filler tube bolt.
- Disconnect the selector lever cable from the manual control lever.
- Squeeze the tabs together and remove the selector lever cable from the bracket.
- Remove the selector lever cable from the selector lever cable clip and position
the selector lever cable and bracket aside.
- Disconnect the throttle control electrical connector.
- Disconnect the bottom PCM electrical connector.
- Remove the transmission fluid level indicator.
- Remove the power steering hose retainers and the wiring harness retainer
from the transaxle filler tube.
- Remove the transaxle filler tube bolt, rotate the transaxle filler tube
from under the Throttle Body (TB) and remove the transaxle filler tube.
- Remove the front wheels. For additional information, refer to Section
204-04.
- Remove the LH and RH halfshaft. For additional information, refer to Section
205-04.
- Remove the starter nuts, then disconnect the wiring from the starter.
- Disconnect the wiring harness retainer from the starter motor stud bolt.
- Remove the nut and remove the bracket from the starter stud.
- Disconnect the Engine Oil Pressure (EOP) switch electrical connector.
- Remove and discard the oil filter.
- Remove the 4 bolts and the oil filter adapter.
- Remove the 2 starter bolts and remove the starter.
- Remove the starter isolator.
- NOTICE: Only rotate the engine in a clockwise direction or engine damage
will occur.
NOTE:
Mark one stud and the flexplate for assembly reference.
Rotate the crankshaft to gain access to the torque converter nuts, then remove
and discard the 4 nuts.
- Remove the roll restrictor bolts, rotate the bottom of the engine away from
the subframe and remove the roll restrictor.
- Disconnect the Output Shaft Speed (OSS) sensor electrical connector.
- Remove the nut from the electrical connector bracket.
- Remove the nut and position the electrical connector bracket aside.
- Remove the upper transaxle-to-engine bolts.
- Remove the transmission fluid cooler tube secondary latches.
- Disconnect the transmission fluid cooler tubes from the transaxle.
- Squeeze the tabs together and slide the transmission fluid cooler tube
lock out of the transmission fluid cooler tube.
- Remove the transmission fluid cooler tubes from the transaxle.
- Install the Engine Support Bar and Adapters and support the engine.
- Remove the nuts and remove the transaxle support insulator.
- Using the Engine Support Bar and Adapters, lower the transaxle assembly
so that the transaxle support insulator bracket clears the unibody.
- Secure the transaxle with a high-lift jack using a safety strap.
- NOTE:
Note the location of the different length bolts for installation.
Remove the 3 transaxle-to-engine bolts.
- Remove the 5 transaxle-to-engine bolts.
- Separate the transaxle from the engine and lower the transaxle.
- Install the Torque Converter Retainer to prevent damage to the torque converter.
- If replacement of the transaxle is required, remove the differential opening
cover.
- Remove the transaxle support insulator bracket nuts and remove the bracket.
- Remove the 2 bolts and the selector lever cable bracket.
