NOTICE: The parking brake cables and rear brake shoes must be adjusted in sequence or a brake drag may occur causing excessive wear to the rear brake shoes.

  1. If applied, fully release the parking brake.
  1. NOTICE: Do not use a prying device on the plastic edges of the parking brake control boot or damage to the boot or floor console trim panel may occur.

    Using hand force only, pull upward on the front edge of the parking brake control boot trim.


  1. Position the parking brake control boot forward until the trim tab clears the floor console trim panel.
    • Slide the parking brake control boot upward on the handle to gain access to the parking brake cable adjustment nut.

  1. Loosen parking brake cable adjustment nut until there is no tension in the cable.

  1. Remove the rear brake drums. For additional information, refer to Section  206-02.
  1. Neutralize the brake shoe/parking brake auto-adjusters (both sides) by pushing the retainer rod on the bottom of the adjuster toward the brake shoe backing plate.

  1. Install the rear brake drums. For additional information, refer to Section  206-02.
  1. Apply the service brakes (brake pedal) 5 times.
  1. Adjust the parking brake control adjustment nut as shown.

  1. Rotate the rear wheels to make sure the brake shoes do not drag.
  1. Slide the parking brake control boot downward on the handle.
    • Position the parking brake control boot rearward, tucking the trim tab under floor console trim panel.

  1. Push downward on the front edge of the parking brake control boot trim until it snaps into place.
