Removal and Installation

All vehicles

WARNING: Do not
use any fluid other than clean brake fluid meeting manufacturer's specification. Additionally, do not use brake fluid that has been previously drained. Following these instructions will help prevent system contamination, brake component damage and the risk of serious personal injury.

NOTICE: Brake fluid is harmful to painted and plastic surfaces. If brake fluid is spilled onto a painted or plastic surface, immediately wash it with water.

  1. With the engine OFF, press the brake pedal several times to deplete the brake booster vacuum.
  1. Remove the battery tray. For additional information, refer to Section  414-01.
  1. Loosen the Battery Junction Box (BJB) screw.

  1. Disconnect the BJB from the bracket and position aside.
    • Press the locking tab.

  1. NOTE:

    Cap the hose connections to prevent fluid loss.

    Disconnect the brake fluid reservoir-to-master cylinder tube.


Vehicles with manual transaxle

  1. Disconnect the clutch master cylinder tube.

All vehicles

  1. NOTE:

    Cap the brake tube connections to prevent fluid loss.

    Disconnect the brake tube fittings.

    • To install, tighten to 20 Nm (177 lb-in) on vehicles without anti-lock brakes.
    • To install, tighten to 15 Nm (133 lb-in) on vehicles with anti-lock brakes.
  1. NOTE:

    Make sure that the master cylinder-to-booster seal is removed with the master cylinder.

    Remove and discard the 2 brake master cylinder nuts and remove the brake master cylinder.

    • Discard the vacuum seal.
    • To install, tighten the new nuts to 18 Nm (159 lb-in).
  1. NOTE:

    Before installing the master cylinder make sure that the new vacuum seal is in place and that the mating faces are clean.


    To install, reverse the removal procedure.

    • Bleed the brake system. For additional information, refer to Section  206-00.

Vehicles with manual transaxle

  1. Bleed the hydraulic clutch system. For additional information, refer to Section  308-00.
